Many of us have a piece or two of old, broken, or outdated heirloom jewelry in the back of a drawer or jewelry box. Perhaps old gifts from former relationships, a single diamond stud that used to be a pair, or a bracelet with a broken clasp. Transforming the old into new is a lot easier than one may think and usually more cost effective than purchasing brand new!

This month we had a customer come in with a long yellow gold chain with a barrel clasp that inquired about turning them into bracelets. We were able to make four 7-inch bracelets with matching barrel clasps for him to distribute to his family. We don’t know the history of the chain, but we were thrilled to help this customer repurpose an older piece and create matching bracelets for his family members.

Another customer we had this month wanted to create a custom gift for her daughter’s wedding day this weekend. She had a combination of diamonds that were hers and her late mothers. The owner of Andrews Jewelers, Andy Moquin, created a 14K white gold double heart pendant encrusted in her mother’s and grandmother’s diamonds. It turned out to be a really lovely, personalized piece that we are sure the bride to be will treasure for years to come and maybe pass down to her own daughter someday. 

My personal favorite transaction we had in helping a customer repurpose jewelry was in May during our gold buying event. We had a weeklong event purchasing scrap gold and silver as the price of gold was historically high. Clients came in all week with their broken and unwanted jewelry and received payments that day in the form of cash or a check. If you chose to use your payout in store you received a 20% bonus. A woman came in with a large collection of scrap gold that was mostly compromised of broken chains, charms, and mismatched earrings. In her collection of “scrap” gold was her engagement ring setting. The diamond had fallen out years prior.

She was also scraping a diamond pendant that she was no longer interested in. We came up with the fabulous idea of using the diamond from the pendant to mount in her engagement ring setting. She also had a little diamond heart pendant that her husband had given her for their 50^th wedding anniversary but didn’t have an appropriate chain to wear it on. She was wearing one yellow gold post earring and one white gold post earring but wanted a matching set. We love mixing metals around here, but it’s not for everyone! We scrapped the mismatched posts and used it toward her payment. This customer was able to revamp her engagement ring including having it sized, purchased a new chain for her anniversary gift, and a set of matching post earrings using her payout.
